Figure Representing a Priest Wearing Pendants

Origin: Nok Culture, Nigeria
Composition: terracotta

This figure is believed to represent a Priest, although its exact meaning and function remain unknown. He is dressed in royal garments to display his authority and holiness, and is adorned with numerous pendants or magical amulets, one of which can be seen here. His cap and beard demonstrate his high prestige. The size, completeness, and elaborate carving make this piece an especially important ancient artifact.

This piece was thermoluminescence tested by Alliance Science Art (Paris), and found to be authentic, having been fired (created) between 366 B.C. and 64 A.D.

The Nok civilization of Nigeria, an agricultural and iron-smelting culture, flourished from 1000 B.C. – 1000 A.D. This dignified head, with its elaborate, carefully accented coiffure is one of the larger such pieces ever to have been excavated from Nigeria. Buried in the Jos Plateau over 2000 years ago, its exact meaning remains a mystery.
