Full Figure with Long Beard
Origin: Sokoto Culture, Nigeria
Composition: terracotta
Sokoto terracottas are characterized by their heavy brow, delicate features, pointed beards, and similarities with Nok terracottas. Very little is known about the Sokoto culture other than that it was located at the confluence of ancient trade routes; in fact, knowledge of this ancient culture is based exclusively on its artistic production, since neither historical, social, nor political records exist.
This piece originally carried another figure on its back, which is believed be a baby - its hands and feet are still visible. Some scholars believe this symbolizes regeneration; the elder carries and teaches the next generation.
Thermoluminescence tested and auth-enticated by Alliance Science Art (Paris), this piece was found to have been fired (created) between 758 B.C. and 162 A.D.
