Large Figure Representing a Warrior or Priest
Origin: Nok Culture, Nigeria
Composition: terracotta
This spectacular, large, unrestored and nearly-complete figure was excavated in Nigeria, where it was buried in the ground over 2000 years ago. It is thought that this figure held either a scepter or weapon, making him either a high priest or prestigious warrior.
Writing about a similarly adorned and postured piece, Bernard DeGrunne writes: "The magnificent bust is a striking illustration of the diversity and complexity of Nok headdresses. This is most probably a high-ranking figure, covered with necklaces and bracelets. His Face carries a haughty expression of a person assured of his own power" ("The Birth of Art In Africa").
Thermoluminescence tested and auth-enticated by Alliance Science Art (Paris), this piece was found to have been fired (created) between 465 and 17 B.C.
