Large Head with 5-Part Coiffure

The Nok civilization of Nigeria, an agricultural and iron-smelting culture, flourished from 1000 B.C. – 1000 A.D. This dignified head, with its elaborate, carefully accented coiffure is one of the larger such pieces ever to have been excavated from Nigeria. Buried in the Jos Plateau over 2000 years ago, its exact meaning remains a mystery.

This piece was thermoluminescence tested by Alliance Science Art (Paris), and found to be authentic, having been fired (created) between 453 and 53 B.C.
