Ekpe Headdress
Origin: Ekoi Tribe (Cross River Region), Nigeria
Composition: wood, animal hide, vegetable fiber, pigments
This incredible piece would be worn atop the head or placed on an altar by members of the Ekpe association. This association is very secretive, yet some historians believe the piece represents a girl that evokes the ideal of feminine beauty and is ready for marriage, whereas some believe these masks were created as substitutes for the heads of slain enemies. These masks are striking for their realism and naturalism. Authentic pieces are collected by museums and collectors worldwide.
This piece is constructed from 5 pieces of wood (all of which are covered with leather). The braids can all be detached from the head. |
